LOCAVORES

Bringing nutritious local foods from the farm to the school lunch table

Through the generous support of the William Penn Foundation MVCS has the opportunity to introduce a new and innovative project to the classroom this year.

As part of their Community School education, children learn more about the community in which they live - getting to the very root of the matter, so to speak.  Children deserve to be taught the fundamentals of cooking skills and making healthy choices about the foods they eat - how all of this impacts them culturally, environmentally and economically as community members.

Working in partnership with Tess Hoke, owner and visionary of The Local 98856, MVCS students experience a locally grown and produced hot lunch each week.  Students visit area farms, learn about production, explore the cost and value of the foods they eat and much more.

I learned that in Chad only 27 out of every 100 people have safe drinking water.  But, I also learned that every country is good in some way.    -Aden

I learned that the United States has 13,491 McDonalds and is not very healthy.  I'm glad we eat healthy food at the Local every week.     - Nate

I learned that only 3 percent of the people in Egypt do not have enough food.   -Korrie

I learned that literacy means the ability to read and write, and in Chad less than half of the people can read.  - Lilly
